Attractions Chester: Chester’s Historic Cathedral Quarter to undergo £7.5m transformation

We’re getting a bit excited here at the Coach House at the recent news that our close neighbour Chester Cathedral is about to undergo a spectacular £7.5m transformation to make it more prominent amongst our wonderful attractions Chester.

The Cathedral which sits right opposite our hotel in Chester deserves a better setting according to Cllr Richard Short so the money will be spent to create a new square linking the city centre and St Werburgh Street to the Cathedral area thus leading more visitors to its doorstep. It will become far more accessible and with a new air of prominence will hopefully attract tourists in their droves to the traditional tourist area surrounding Town Hall Square. Town Hall Square is also currently undergoing repair works to preserve our next door neighbour, the striking Town Hall, which first opened 1869 after the original Exchange building which once stood in its place was burnt down.

Refurbishments to take place (both internally and externally) include improvements to lighting, heating and the addition of a terrace café.  A new flexible stage in the Nave will provide the cathedral and the city with scope for sustaining a wider range of events and will be capable of hosting up to 1,800 people.

The new and improved cathedral area which will include a brand new iconic entrance and visitor centre will of course benefit b&b’s Chester as well as our quality hotel Chester as it is hoped the improvements will attract an extra 130,000 visitors a year
